Notes: This whole story was based on a dream I had that I finally decided to write down and the more I thought about it, the more I liked it and the more notes I wrote on it before I just started writing the whole damn thing out.
Kero landed next to the ship carefully as the wind began to blow hard again. He put his head down to let Constance slide off his long neck. She slid off easily and turned around to watch him turn back into his little self. When he was back to his regular size, he shook himself for a minute and licked his lips. He looked at Constance and wagged his tail proudly” job well done! We did good!”
She smiled to him and walked toward the ship, the back door beginning to open for her. She walked into the cool breeze of the metal ship and slapped a box full of buttons figuring one of them would do what she wanted. There was a loud beeping noise as the door behind her closed, and she immediately turned to the right up the stairs. She walked threw an open door and down a long hallway passing the section of the ship that contained the important rooms such as the Kitchen, the Dinning Room and the infirmary. The walls themselves were bare except for the metal gray color on them. On the wall next to the open doors to the kitchen, dinning room and infirmary were the names of the rooms in a red sloppy handwriting. Her pace quickened after a moment when there was no movement from the ship.
“JC, why aren’t we in the air?” she asked getting upset again.
“Sorry, I was waiting for you and Kero to get back” he said apologetically.
“Well, we’re back and if you didn’t notice we have company so the pace out of here should be faster dear.” she said walking threw the hallways up to the cockpit.
“Yes Captain,” JC said in what Constance thought of as a sad tone. She continued walking toward the cockpit with Kero trotting behind her. She practically jumped over the three stairs up to a mini platform and jumped two steps at a time while grabbing the handles up to the cockpit. When she
finally reached the door, it opened quickly before her making a swishing noise. She walked in and the ship gave a jolt up. She lost her footing and tripped into the pilot chair, stomach first. No one was sitting there, but the controls around the room were moving on their own and all the lights
were activated. There were two large panels on a top level with chairs to go with them. Below them was another level with two more large control panels and chairs as well. At the last level was a big chair for the captain to see and overview. Constance rarely sat in that chair since it gave her a bad backache.
“Thank you” Constance said trying to catch her breath from being slammed in the stomach from the chair. She held on tight as the ship propelled upward into space, getting faster and faster.
Constance hated takeoffs the most. Once they were in space, the ship calmed down a bit and the controls on the boards moved back into their regular spots. Constance sat down in the pilot’s chair
and sighed a sigh of relief. How good it felt to sit down after such a hard job. And this was worth certainly it.
“So do you have the book?” JC’s voice echoed threw the room.
She smiled and reached into her inner coat pocket to find it still there and pulled it out. As she did, she heard a camera in the left corner zoom in and she held it in that direction giving it a little shake. “Mission accomplished” she said triumphantly. “Why don’t you come and see it?” she asked.
“I’m still charging” JC’s voice said embarrassed.
“So? You know you want to see it?” she said seductively. She waved the book teasingly to the camera and waited a second. She saw the camera zoom back to its original spot and noticed a light to her left go from green to red.
She smiled to herself and took the book in both hands to examine it while she waited. The cover had no markings on it, and there were no markings on the binding either. She was tempted to open the book and feel the paper on her fingers, but felt it was probably safe to wait. Never know what
could be hiding in a book this valuable.
She heard the door behind her swish open and footsteps entered behind her. She turned in her chair and looked up to see a young man with dark hair down to just below his neck. His piercing blue eyes staring at her. He was incredibly handsome, and looked well built under his clothes. His
face looked tired and embarrassed at her. He sighed when he saw her and she couldn’t help but smile triumphantly.
“Is that it?” he asked pointing to the book.
“Yup” she said handing it to him. He took it and began to examine it himself in his own way.
“How much longer did you have to recharge?” she asked noticing how upset he looked and tried to change the subject.
“At least another 3 hours”he sighed. “That last stop took a lot out of my system. It took a while for me to repair myself properly. Probably another reason why I didn’t pick up on that other ship.”
“Yeah, but it was well worth it,” she said softly leaning forward to touch his arm. He looked down at her and finally smiled back at her. Constance sighed to herself as they forgot about the book completely, and started at each other for what seemed like hours.
Suddenly the door behind them opened, and a small girl came running in toward Constance.
Constance immediately took her hand off JC and turned toward the girl. She was young and was completely adorable in every way. She had gray shoulder length hair with brown bangs and brown triangle shapes that connected to her long jack rabbit ears. She wore a gray tank top, with brown triangle shapes on her stomach and gray pants. Her green eyes and long lashes looked straight ahead at her target as she ran threw the door with a big smile. She wore brown boots and purple gloves as they jumped onto Constance for a hug. Her long tail wagged happily and her wings flexed back and forth excitedly.
“Captain! Captain!” the girl’s voice squeaked. ”I’m so glad your back! I’m so glad your back!” She squeezed Constance’s neck and Constance had to pry the girl back to breathe.
“Thank you Keira. .” Constance managed to cough.
“I was worried about you and Kero! Is he OK?” she asked looking for him. Constance looked around not really remembering if he had followed her in or not. But at the sound of his name, Kero got up from his hiding spot in the corner where he usually sat for takeoffs. He walked toward Keira triumphantly and sat down in front of JC.
“Your brother’s fine,”Constance said comfortingly. “In fact, he did an excellent job. So good you guys may get an extra dessert tonight after dinner. You should definitely thank him when you get
the chance”
Keira ran toward her brother and gave him a hug too. “Yeah for dessert!” she giggled. Constance and JC giggled as well. Finally after petting her brother and checking him over she turned toward JC and noticed him holding the book
“Is that the book you wanted Captain?” she asked, her ears bending back in a confused manner. JC looked at it and held it up for her to see.
“Yup, this is it,” JC said holding it out to her. She walked up to it and without ever touching it, took a few sniffs.
“Ooh, there’s something special in there” she said getting excited.
“I know!” Constance said chuckling and reaching out for Keira. She skipped toward Constance and jumped into her lap like a daughter and mother. “And you get to help me find out what that is as soon as JC’s done with it. Does that sound like fun?”
“I guess so,” she said sounding bored. “If I find anything does that mean I get an extra, EXTRA dessert?” she said leaning over to Constance.
Constance raised her eyebrows and made a confused, funny face. She looked at JC for help but JC could only watch amused as he crossed his arms. “Maybe. . “Constance said unsure. “It depends on what we find OK?”
“Then lets go!” Keira jumped off Constance lap and jumped toward JC grabbing his shirt. He smiled and bent down to her height.
“Let me finish charging myself and then I’ll take a look at the book. In the mean time, why don’t you help the Captain back to her room so she can take a bath and get ready OK? I think she would really like you to help her with that, don’t you think?” JC said softly and calmly. It struck a cord in Constance’s heart as she listened and watch the two of them together. Keira smiled and nodded before turning back to Constance. She held her hand out for Constance who took it softly.
“Come on Captain, I’ll help!” she giggled.
Constance got up still holding Kiera’s hand and began walking toward the door. She stopped before exiting and turned back to JC. “JC, don’t plot a course yet till we finish with the book, just get us out of range of the other ship. Got it?” she said sternly.
JC nodded at the command, and behind him, a few buttons moved around on their own. Constance licked her lips and held her breath debating what she wanted to say next.
“And let me know when your done charging so we can look at the book,” she threw out as she began to walk out the door. Suddenly she stopped and walked back into the room right up to him.
“Oh and one more thing. . “
JC looked nervously at her and not realizing it, he straightened right up. “Yes, yes, “he stuttered.
“Don’t call me “Captain”“ she whispered and kissed him on the nose. She smiled teasingly and walked out the door, not looking back. JC stood there embarrassed and sighed. He looked down and noticed that Kero was still sitting there watching him intently. “What?” JC asked defensively.
Kero got up and made a groaning noise in his throat and wagged his tail. JC sighed and shrugged. “Ok, Ok, lets go.”
